xNamed

Give infrastructure, products and domains a consistent naming system.

xNamed is a library-first naming tool for engineers who want to inspect existing names, create names from a convention and understand where names can be confused. Its core brings naming rules into software so that applications, scripts and agents can work from the same model.

The product is being developed around a Swift library, a command-line interface, MCP and HTTP API access, and native macOS and iOS apps. The library, command-line interface and macOS interface exist today as a prototype. MCP, the HTTP API and the iOS app are planned.

What the prototype does

The hostname inspector breaks supported names into their component fields. The minting interface constructs names from the existing grammar. Support for user-authored, versioned naming schemes is planned.

The naming linter evaluates consistency, understandability, conciseness and distinguishability. It gives consistency the highest weight and reports findings alongside a suggested normalized name. Comparing conventions across an entire collection of names is planned.

The core library supports themed vocabularies and checks candidate names for duplicates and nearby spellings within its in-memory allocation ledger. A themed allocation requires a separate description of the resource's role. Persistent reservations, crash recovery and bulk allocation are planned.

The export library produces hosts records and DNS zone fragments when explicit address mappings are supplied. The current command-line and app previews use clearly labelled simulation data; they are not ready-to-install network configuration.

What is planned

Portfolio-aware suggestions will check names against owned domains and read-only registrar availability. Domain portfolio import, consolidation analysis, richer theme screening and rename planning are planned. Registrar access is intended to remain read-only: the product is not intended to purchase domains or change registrations or DNS.

The planned MCP tools and HTTP API will let agents suggest, check and reserve names through the same core used by the command-line interface and apps. Persistent local reservations and consistent results across these interfaces are development goals.

Platforms and requirements

The current macOS prototype declares macOS 15.0 or later. Existing packaging targets Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Building the core and command-line tool requires Swift 6.0 tooling.

The Swift package declares iOS 17.0 support, but a released iOS app is not established. The iOS app and final public release requirements are planned.

Status and availability

xNamed is in the foundation stage.

A public App Store product is the selected direction, with macOS first and iOS planned. Public App Store availability and a release date are not established. Theme licensing must be resolved before public submission.

The public product domain is xnamed.app. This is the product's designated domain; a live website and download destination are not established by the available project records.
